Classroom Management Series

OSAC Members,

This is the new teacher training that we've talked about at our meetings, that I thought we would have to wait a year to provide.  However, because of the many requests and urgent need for this training for your new, emergency certified, or teachers struggling with classroom management, Dr. Lein has agreed to provide OSAC districts with this training now, including providing college credit if needed.  Classroom size is limited to 20 so enroll your teachers today in this proven-effective training to help and their them have a successful year!

Classroom Discipline: TLI Cohort 1


The Teaching & Leading Initiative of Oklahoma (or TLI) is a nonprofit professional development training organization that was established in partnership with OU-Tulsa and Collegiate Hall. The organization emphasizes best instructional practices and builds technical skills in novice teachers. The professional learning model is based upon strong research (i.e. Joyce & Showers, 2002; Lein, 2017) that emphasizes practice and consistent follow up. The content has been used throughout the past three years at Collegiate Hall, which achieves an average of 1.8 years of growth in math, science, and reading with almost all novice teachers in a high poverty community. Target Audience:
Novice teachers (within the first three years) in any grade or content area. Limited to 20 participants.
 

Purposes:
The purpose of the training is to provide teachers with the technical skills to command a classroom. They will learn the basis for strong discipline philosophy, engage in a variety of practice activities, and build the technical skills that will support their growth. The training is considered a cohort model because there will be 4 meetings throughout the year with some online work in between sessions. Teachers are expected to attend all sessions.
 

College Credit:
College credit is available to teachers (classroom management) through OU-Tulsa with appropriate tuition and fees.
 

Presenter:
Dr. Joanna Lein is the Executive Director of the Teaching & Leading Initiative of Oklahoma and an adjunct professor at OU-Tulsa and Johns Hopkins University. She has coached over 200 novice teachers in a variety of school environments. Prior to starting this organization, Dr. Lein was the assistant superintendent in Cleveland, Oklahoma where she supervised principals and led the curriculum and instruction work. She holds a doctorate from OU-Tulsa where she studied novice teacher development, specifically examining how to build competence in beginning teachers through instructional coaching.
 

Logistics:
Location: Building D, OSAC Conference Room - ICTC, Muskogee
Time:  8:00 to 4:00 each day

Session 1: Introduction to Discipline Philosophy and Giving Assertive Directions - Thursday, September 27, 2018
Session 2: Reinforcing Behavior and Holding a High Bar - Tuesday, October 30, 2018
Session 3: A Culture of Achievement - Wednesday, December 5, 2018
Session 4: Advanced Discipline Techniques -Tuesday, January 15, 2019
 
Teachers will be expected to complete some action items between sessions. 
 

Cost:
$250 per person for OSAC districts for all 4 sessions
$350 per person for non-member districts

 
Cohort 2 beginning in January!
