Math Teacher Mentorship

Supporting the Continual Development of Math Instruction

OSAC Members, 

We are excited to offer this coaching option for your math teachers, which includes ongoing mentorship and on-site visits from the 2015 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year, Jason Proctor, a nationally board certified, doctoral candidate currently teaching at NSU. What a great opportunity to support your math teachers and improve your students' math skills!

 

Math Teacher Mentorship

Supporting the Continual Development of Math Instruction

Class size limited to 20 participants

Audience:

This training is ideal for Novice Secondary Math Teachers (6-12) in need of a community of math teachers and one-on-one support. Also, this training is suitable for Veteran Secondary Math Teachers looking for a collaborative environment to explore new or advanced teaching methods with the added potential of serving as a mentor to new math educators.

Purpose:

    The purpose of this training is to help teachers:

  • Interpret the Oklahoma Academic Standards for Mathematics.
  • Apply quality resources to support math instruction.
  • Investigate appropriate use of technology to enhance student learning.
  • Design instructional experiences that support the development of 21st-century skills through math exploration.

Method:

To best meet the needs of individual teachers, this training will be provided in a blended format. Teachers will participate in two (2) full day training sessions that will focus on content and pedagogical knowledge. In addition, each participant will have the opportunity to schedule two (2) site visits or virtual chats with the mentor. Site visits may consist of modeling, team teaching, or observations lasting up to 2 hours at a site and designed to meet the needs of the participating teacher.
 

Location and Dates:   Participants attend both days.

Wednesday, October 24 - Navigating OAS & Engagement Strategies

Friday, November 9 - Quality Math Tasks Resources


Time:  9:00am – 2:30pm (lunch included)


Mentor:  

Jason Proctor is an adjunct instructor in the College of Education at Northeastern State University where he works with teacher candidates. A former high school math teacher, Jason is Nationally Board Certified in AYA-Math and was recognized as the 2015 Oklahoma Teacher of the Year. He is completing a doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment with a focus on the development of mathematical knowledge for teaching. Through mentorship, he presents professional development that provides teachers with experiential learning opportunities relevant to today’s secondary math classroom.
