Lori Cosby has been a classroom teacher for 20 years and is currently an academic coach at Tahlequah Public Schools. She has a Master’s Degree in Education and has been National Board Certified as a Middle Childhood Generalist. She has recently completed the three-year program, Oklahoma Mathematics Achievement Project.


Target Audience:

This workshop is targeted to first year teachers and/or those who want to enhance their elementary math instruction. It is intended to give new teachers an understanding of issues and concepts that they will encounter in the classroom.


Purpose: Teachers will be able to

  • access information from the State Department including but not limited to State Standards and Item Specs
  • effectively utilize formative and summative assessments
  • develop the growth mindset that every child can learn mathematics
  • learn rich tasks that offer all children a starting place
  • gain deeper understanding for number sense and its importance at all grade levels
  • use literature to teach mathematical concepts and extension activities
  • learn and practice questioning techniques
  • leave with ideas and activities to use immediately in the classroom


Session 1, September 5 Topics:

  • Growth mind set and how to establish it in the classroom.
  • Quality math tasks and adapting to individual grade levels and needs
  • The need to establish number sense – place value experiences for students
  • Formative vs. summative assessments and creating formative assessments to drive instruction


Session 2, October 3 Topics:

  • Teaching math with literature
  • Using beans to teach basic facts necessary to be successful in math
  • More Quality math tasks and adapting to individual grade levels and needs
  • Good questioning
  • Mistakes in math and how to use them in the classroom


$100 per session for OSAC members

$150 per session for non-members

Cancellation Policy:

Since meals, presenters, training materials, and other costs are pre-paid by OSAC, please provide notice of cancellation at least 4 days prior to any OSAC event you are registered to attend. Your district will not be charged for cancellations made within 4 days of the event. Cancellations within 48 hours of an OSAC event will be charged at half price. No-shows will be charged at full price. Thank you for understanding!
