Instructional Coaching

The purpose of the training is to provide instructional leaders with the foundations for strong instructional coaching, aligned with research, theory and evidence. In these 2 days of learning experiences, instructional leaders learn about the basic of instructional coaching, from induction to exit. Sessions Include: Establishing a Coaching Relationship, Classroom Observation, Planning for a Coaching Session, Executing a Coaching Session, Real-Time Coaching, and Differentiated Coaching. Includes both content and practice.

Agenda - Day 1:

· Overview of Coaching

· Coaching Continuum

· Identifying the “Bar” for Good Teaching, Low Inference Notes, and Identification Key Action Steps

· Classroom Observations

· Developing a Strong Theory Using Evidence


Agenda - Day 2: 

· Practice with Day 1

· Differentiated Coaching: Using Skill and Will to Assess Approach

· Deep Dive on Practice-Based and Real-Time Coaching

· Fish Bowl, Model, and Practice Rounds

Presented by:

Dr. Joanna Lein is the Executive Director of the Teaching & Leading Initiative of Oklahoma and an adjunct professor at OU-Tulsa and Johns Hopkins University. She has coached over 250 novice teachers in a variety of school environments. Prior to starting this organization, Dr. Lein was the assistant superintendent in Cleveland, Oklahoma, where she supervised principals and led the curriculum and instruction work. She holds a doctorate from OU-Tulsa where she studied novice teacher development, specifically how to build competence in beginning teachers through instructional coaching.


The Teaching & Leading Initiative of Oklahoma (TLI) is a nonprofit professional development training organization that was established to address the human capital needs in Oklahoma school. TLI emphasizes best instructional practices and builds technical skills in novice teachers and the leaders that support them. The professional learning model is based on research (i.e. Joyce & Showers, 2002; Lein, 2017) that emphasizes practice and consistent follow up. Cancellation Policy:

Since meals, presenters, training materials, and other costs are pre-paid by OSAC, please provide notice of cancellation at least 4 days prior to any OSAC event you are registered to attend. Your district will not be charged for cancellations made within 4 days of the event. Cancellations within 48 hours of an OSAC event will be charged at half price. No-shows will be charged at full price. Thank you for understanding!
