Pam Henley, MEd, reading specialist and certified academic language therapist, has trained teachers across the state.

 

Target Audience:

 

Classroom teachers, reading specialists, reading assistants, literacy coaches. Grade levels: K-8 literacy teachers, but Oct 23 would be for all grades & subjects.

 

Purpose:



To understand that dyslexia affects between 17-20% of our school population and that much has been recently revealed through brain research and brain imaging which can enhance learning and instructional strategies in the regular classroom, intervention groups and special education, To gain a clear understanding of dyslexia (Truths, Myths and Misconceptions) and

its broad effects in education, to be able to identify risk factors, and discover how to effectively teach students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties in every classroom, to learn strategies for teaching reading and spelling to students with dyslexia... AND teaching them in every discipline using strategies/ appropriate accommodations and differentiated teaching

 

This is NOT a training on testing students for dyslexia, but a training on making appropriate accommodations for all students

 

* The Reading Process- Discover the process that students walk through as they learn to read and the process that teachers must go through as they teach students to read. Learn how the brain reads, the 5 components of an effective reading program and how best to teach them.

 

*Dyslexia 101- Unlocking the Key to Reading and Writing- Dyslexia affects approximately 20% of the population. Learn the basics: What it is and what it is not; Indicators, Accommodations for the classroom, Appropriate Instructional Methods and Educational Empathy.

 

* Phonological Awareness- Research now confirms the importance of teaching phonological/phonemic awareness as it is the foundation for phonics and spelling skills. These skills are the greatest predictor of becoming a skilled reader in first grade and beyond.

 

*Vigorous Vocabulary- Words meaning is a strong determiner of reading comprehension. Learn simple but fin and effective teaching strategies for all classes and all grade. This is a "must-do"!

 

*Building Fluent Readers- Fluent Reading is a hallmark of strong readers and is a good predictor of reading comprehension. Learn ways to develop fluency in readers of all ages. Taken from Dr. Tim Rasinski's book: Developing Fluent Readers.

 

*Comprehension- Learn how to build deep comprehension through dialogue and reflective discussion leading to responding critically and meaningfully to complex text. Learn the 7 Comprehension Strategies that every child needs from PK-12 grade!

 

*Word Study- Lets Face it! It is impossible to teach students to spell every word in the English Language. Learn how to build strong readers and spellers through these fun and engaging word study activities.

 

*Grammar- Who knew the important role grammar plays in comprehension?? We now understand grammar is not just important for composition, but also enhances the understanding of text. Learn how to teach basic grammar skills through a multisensory approach that benefits all literacy learners.

Cancellation Policy:

Since meals, presenters, training materials, and other costs are pre-paid by OSAC, please provide notice of cancellation at least 4 days prior to any OSAC event you are registered to attend. Your district will not be charged for cancellations made within 4 days of the event. Cancellations within 48 hours of an OSAC event will be charged at half price. No-shows will be charged at full price. Thank you for understanding!
