English Language Arts Text Selection:

Processes and Rationales

Join Dr. Lara Searcy in an examination and discussion of the ELA Text Selection: Process & Rationale, as well as a review of the Oklahoma Academic Standards for ELA.

Participants may enroll in any session.

Those unable to attend will receive the recorded zoom via email.

Teachers will work through a process to select/ interrogate texts and create/revise rationales and policies that affirm, celebrate, and advocate for students. Teachers will learn how to apply their own critical, literary lenses to the texts they (or a district) select in order to ensure “all learners hear the voices of their own heritage in the literature they encounter” in an “English language arts classroom [that] is inclusive of race, ethnicity, culture, and all perspectives that reflect the richness of human experience” (OAS-ELA, 2016, p. 4).

Dr. Lara Searcy is an Associate Professor, English Education Specialist who teaches English teacher candidates. She is a former high school English teacher and middle school Literacy Resource Specialist and is Nationally Board Certified in AYA-ELA. In 2018, she was awarded the Circle of Excellence in Teaching. Her research interests include teacher efficacy, standards-based reforms, and teacher professional development. She is a proud member of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the Former Past President of the Oklahoma affiliate- OKCTE
