Purpose:

Teachers will participate in the writing process (OAS-ELA 2) in order to create critical writing units (OAS-ELA 3) for each of the three main composition modes- narrative, informative, and argumentative. Each session will align to the Oklahoma Academic Standards (OAS) and provide general and mode-specific writing strategies that emphasize the recursive writing process. Teachers will create units and models they can use in their secondary classroom-- especially in preparation for standardized writing tests.

  •  to examine and define the writing modes in alignment with the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts.
  •  to provide general and mode-specific strategies for teaching writing.
  • to understand the recursive writing process.
  • to understand that most writing uses a combination of modalities, though each writing mode will be presented individually.
  •  to have teachers participate in the writing process to enhance their understanding of the assignments.
  • to have teachers create writing mode units and models they can use in their classroom.
  •  to provide strategies and resources for grading student writing.
