Pam Henley, MEd, reading specialist and certified academic language therapist, has trained teachers across the state. She has been an educator for over 30 years. She has taught Pre-K through college level. She is a reading specialist and a certified academic language therapist. Pam has been a conference speaker for over 25 years. She has been a literacy consultant and a professional development speaker conducting school-wide and small group workshops, seminars, and embedded coaching.

This is a two day training!

Day 1: The Reading Process and Developing Fluent Readers

Day 2: Phonological Awareness and Vigorous Vocabulary

Purpose:

Nov 4:

  • The Reading Process – Discover the process that students walk through as they learn to read and write and the process that teachers MUST use to teach students to read and write. This presentation will cover how the brain reads, the five components of effective reading programs and best practices in teaching them. (All grades: Pk-12)
  • Developing Fluent Readers – Fluent reading is a hallmark of strong readers and is a good predictor of reading comprehension. Learn fun and engaging ways to develop fluent readers of all ages. Taken from research in Dr. Tim Rasinski’s book: Developing Fluent Readers. (PK-6 th )

Nov. 18:

  • Phonological Awareness – Research now confirms the importance of teaching phonological awareness and phonemic awareness as it is the foundation for learning to read and spell successfully. The skills are one of the greatest predictors of becoming a successful reader and speller in first grade and beyond. (PK-6th Grade )
  • Vigorous Vocabulary – Word meaning is a strong determiner of reading comprehension. This presentation will walk teachers through simple but effective and highly engaging strategies for all classes and grades. This is a favorite among trainees! (All grades: Pk-12)

Power Grammar and Word Study:

an alternative to the spelling list

Purpose:

  • Power Grammar – Who knew the important role grammar plays in comprehension? We now understand grammar is not just important for composition, but it also enhances the understanding of text. Learn how to teach the basic grammar skills through a fun and multisensory approach that benefits all learning in elementary grades. (PK-6th Grade )
  •  
  • Word Study – Ditch the lists!! We really cannot teach children how to spell every word in the English Language! Participants will learn how to build strong spellers (and readers) through fun and engaging word study activities!

Kdg. - 6th Grade Reading Teachers or Classroom Teachers, Reading Specialists, SpEd Teachers, Administrators

The Writing Process K-5th Grade

Purpose:

The Writing Process (K-5) – This full day workshop will provide teachers with an engaging and organized approach to teaching students in early elementary how organize thoughts and plan their writing, how to use a variety of graphic organizers to create strong sentences, paragraphs and essays, and how to revise and edit for making writing “public”.

K-5th Grade Classroom Teachers

First Grade Foundations Training

Purpose:

First Grade Foundations/Structured Language Basics – Multisensory Structured Language (Orton-Gillingham) approaches to teaching first through 5th grade literacy. These programs represent comprehensive literacy instruction consisting of building strong phonological, phonics, grammar and writing skills that have consistently proven to be the most effective method for all learners. Those completing all five days (SLB) can obtain a certification as an Academic Language Practitioner.



Attendance for all 5 sessions is required.
