PK-4th Grade Elementary Math Teachers

Agenda 

 

Day 1:  October 18

8:30-11:30 Early Number Sense and Counting

This session will focus on the progression of counting and how to and the importance of building number sense. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that promote conceptual understanding and strategies they can use in their classroom. 

11:30-12:00 Lunch

12:00-3:00 Addition and Subtraction Strategies

This session will focus on the progression of addition and subtraction. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that promote conceptual understanding and strategies they can use in their classroom.

Take-Home Manipulatives Provided: 100 board, base ten blocks, math activity cards, Number Bonds activity cards

 

Day 2: November 29

8:30-11:30 Differentiated and Tiered Learning

This session will focus on strategies to differentiate instruction. It will also explore tiered learning and how teachers can use it in the classroom.

11:30-12:00 Lunch

12:00-3:00 OAS Frameworks– vocabulary and verbs

This session will focus on the Oklahoma Academic Standards and the Frameworks. We will explore the terminology and verbs used in the standards to increase our understanding of what is expected of the teacher and students. We will also examine how teachers can use the frameworks to develop lessons and pacing calendars.

 

Day 3: January 13

8:30-11:30 Multiplication, Division and Fractions

This session will focus on the progression of multiplication, division, and fractions. Participants will engage in hands-on activities that promote conceptual understanding and strategies they can use in their classroom.

11:30-12:00 Lunch

12:00-3:00 Games, Centers and Manipulatives

This session will focus on games and centers teachers can use in their classroom to develop conceptual understanding of mathematics. It will also explore how to use linking cubes, rekenreks, and number lines to develop number sense in students.

Take-Home Manipulatives Provided:  Games, 20-Bead Rekenrek Abacus, math linking cubes, fraction tiles, pattern blocks

 

Day 4: February 2

8:30-3:00 Children’s Literature, Problem Solving and Math Talks

This session will focus on using children’s literature to introduce and reinforce mathematical concepts. Participants will evaluate different literature to determine if or when it should be used. They will also participate in and learn how to conduct math talks in order to engage learners and build conceptual understanding.

Take-Home Manipulatives Provided: circle stickers, 2 children’s books, tangrams
